I once wrote an entire essay about how I am “soft like pussy,” so please, don’t misunderstand my intentions when I say that I am not a #SoftLife girlie.
I teared up at the first half of it, which made me flounder through the back half. Thank you for these words and I'm going to have to keep coming back to this piece friend.
Wow, this. Saving this because I know I’ll be returning to these words time and time again. So profoundly put, thank you so so much for dissecting this.🤎
Bethany Nicole, you write with such a clarity of voice that I find myself gasping at times. This is a kind of writing that illuminates. I started a podcast in 2021 called “dear soft black woman”. The idea was to offer a definition of vocation that embrace softness. I got so weary and tired of feeling for so many reasons on that project but what you’ve named here in this post capsulate so much of my exhaustion. I felt like I was pushing against a dominant narrative that was moving softness and its public conversations towards materialism. Having people like you and Dr. Chanequa Walker Barnes right about the #softlife movement’s failures makes me feel less alone.

This was so beautiful to read and dissected beautifully.

Thank you for the reminder of the origin of Soft Life!
This was so beautiful and necessary. Thank you for writing this, I'll be back here to reread for sure.
