WOW!! You Nailed it exposing the many Layers of this Movie....it Feels So Authentic to me because I have a Healthy Respect for Conjure etc. It was 'Our Way' BEFORE Brainwashing & Whitewashing Our Heritage was Implemented. I am of Native American Chickasaw Heritage my Grandfather was a Shaman back in Oklahoma....I have a Deep Respect for Keepers of Our Mysticism & Spirituality.
I enjoyed reading this. Probably one of my favorite pieces surrounding Sinners altogether.
The section where you speak about Sammie’s words framing the church as forced inheritance, it made me think about a Kendrick Lamar line from “Count Me Out” on Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. He said “Anytime I couldn't find God, I still could find myself through a song” and we all relate to that so much. Being raised in the church, we grow to learn that scripture ain’t always the answer and sometimes you have to find another way. It's the connection of how we feel more at home with our music, something we were able to choose, compared to the church--something we were forced into. And when given a good song, we all know what can be done.
Amazing piece! Got my gears turning early this morning.
This is suchhhh an honor. Thank you so so much. I love the Kendrick tie in because that’s another one who speaks so plainly about the relationship between music and god and prophecy and imagining.
I should write something about Afrofuturism. I been trying but the angle hasn’t hit right enough yet. Maybe Kendrick is the answer.
These are amazing insights and some deep history too! I felt seen by the women twerking in the kitchen, as generations of Black women congregated in the kitchen, and no judgments need to be made; just pure community and connection! 💯
I haven't seen this movie yet, but I love this! Especially this line:
"During his performance, Sammie becomes something most of us weren’t told we could be: spiritually sovereign. Not bound by doctrine like his Daddy, or by profit like the SmokeStack brothers. Not afraid of being too sensual, or too talented or too Black. Sammie is whole."
The spiritually sovereign part was such a bar!! As well as the part about circular energy. A great piece!

I heard there was gonna be a sinner 2? Have you heard that?
I have not actually. I thought Coogler said he wanted it to stand alone.
I just heard it from a garage sale from the black neighbors
I was excited so I wasn't sure
